In units 1 & 2, Lynton will introduce you to the course, discuss the medium of watercolour and what you can expect to achieve by the end of the course. The second unit moves on to take a look at the kinds of materials you should buy and compares the differing quality of materials on the market.

Unit 3 and 4 cover the basic principles of drawing a landscape. This unit will set out a series of tips and tricks that you can use when approaching your painting to help you simplify the complexities within a landscape. You can also expect to cover the principles of composition in which you will learn to compose an aesthetically pleasing layout.

Unit 5 & 6 begins with an introduction to the mixing of colour and tone. These units will be extremely important in helping you mix correct colour and use tone as a way to create a true sense of depth to your painting. Moving into unit 6, you will be introduced to the ‘Three Tone Rule’ with an explanation as to how this principle can be applied to tackle any object within a landscape.

Unit 7 will begin with a demonstration as to how you ought t go about handling the medium of watercolour. You will be shown how to layer paint on wet and dry surfaces and the effects this can achieve. Unit 8 will move on to a full demonstration which gives a step by step breakdown in painting a relatively simple landscape painting which you can use as a guide to paint along with.

Unit 9 will offer an introduction to the types of experimental methods you can introduce into your watercolour painting including the use of salt, splatter and scratching and demonstrate how this can bring a sense of texture to any watercolour painting. In unit 10, you will be introduced to a simple way in which you can make your landscape paintings come to life with the inclusion of figures. By the end of this unit, you will be able to use figures to tell stories and add a narrative to your paintings.

In unit 11, you will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration of a final piece which will draw together several of the skills that will have been introduced during this course.
